The golden beads are a math material designed to develop a tactile understanding of quantity from 1-1000, and to introduce the child to the decimal system. Early work with the golden beads is simply learning their names: unit, ten bar, hundred square and thousand cube. Eventually, the child begins to use the decimal cards with the golden beads, forming the connection between numerals and quantities. Finally, they use the golden beads in static and dynamic operations including addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. Children typically begin to show interest in this work around age 4.
