The Montessori Land and Water Forms introduce the child to a concrete experience of common topographical features on the Earth, as a part of our larger curriculum in Geography and the Cultural Subjects. In the Primary classrooms, five pairs of Land and Water forms are presented: island & lake, gulf & bay, archipelago & system of lakes, cape & peninsula, isthmus & strait. These materials are especially appealing to the child because they involve water. In later lessons, sometimes small objects are incorporated for sorting, such as land and water animals or land and water transportation.
